The Complex Puzzle of Affordable Housing: Why Zoning Changes Alone Won't Suffice
The United States is grappling with an escalating housing crisis, where soaring costs and limited affordable options have become an unfortunate reality for millions of individuals and families. Addressing this crisis demands multifaceted solutions that go beyond simple remedies. While changing zoning laws has been suggested as a potential solution, it's essential to recognize that zoning changes alone will not be enough to untangle the intricate web of factors contributing to the housing and affordable housing crisis in the United States.
Multi-Family Moratorium Passes In Millbury
On the evening of May 2, 2023, Article 22 was successfully passed at the Annual Town Meeting in Millbury, Massachusetts, imposing a Temporary Moratorium on Multi-Family Dwelling Units. The approval received a two-thirds majority vote. We would like to express our gratitude to all the registered Millbury voters who participated in the Annual Town Meeting and supported Article 22. The outcome reflects our collective strength and ability to achieve positive outcomes for our community as a whole.
Arguments For A Temporary Building Moratorium
On May 2, 2023, Millbury voters will consider a town article to temporarily halt the issuance of new multi-family dwelling permits for 18 months. The moratorium aims to address overcrowding, preserve neighborhood character, and promote sustainable tax bases. The Planning Board unanimously recommended the article, and town officials and residents will review zoning bylaws to align with the master plan. This initiative has gained support from local voters, who wish to balance open space, commercial, industrial, and residential taxes to ensure the burden of increasing expenses doesn't fall solely on residential taxpayers.
Rename Aldrich Street To Aldrich Avenue Withdrawn
Town Manager, Sean Hendricks, reached out to one of our neighbors, the author of the citizens petition to “Rename Aldrich Avenue to Aldrich Avenue,” to inform us (the petitioners), that Town Meeting (the registered voters of Millbury) does not have the authority to rename an official street acceptance, as the citizens petition requested and as we were previously advised by another town official was the formal process to be followed.
Paving Of Rice Road
According to a drive-by conversation this afternoon with the Town of Millbury's DPW Director, Rice Road will be mostly paved from the Providence & Worcester Railroad crossing (our neighborhood side) to the last manhole on Rice Road near South Main Street on Monday, November 28, 2022.
